Waterford Police Tase, Shoot Sword-Wielding Man

WATERFORD (WWJ) - A 25-year-old man is hospitalized in serious condition after Waterford Township Police officers tased and shot him as he allegedly tried to attack them with a two-foot long sword.

Waterford police were called to the home around 1:25 a.m. Thursday by a concerned family member who said the man was off his medication and cutting up and damaging the home a martial arts-type weapon.

The man had left the house by the time officers arrived, but police found him nearby.

Upon seeing police, the man held the sword above his head and asked officers to shoot him, according to a news release from Waterford Police Chief Dan McCaw.

The suspect was shot in the hip during the incident.

Officials said the man has threatened to use "cutting instruments" in the past. Police found a second sword on him after the incident.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that the Officers acted responsibly and professionally given the situation that they were confronted with," said Chief Dan McCaw, in a statement.

The suspect's name has not been released as an investigation continues.
