Merit Announces Topics For Network Learning Event

Merit Network Inc. last week announced presentation topics for the fall MJTS meeting, to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at locations in East Lansing, Escanaba and Gaylord. All Merit Member organizations are encouraged to attend for a free day of learning.

The meeting will gather at the MSU Union in East Lansing, Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba and the University Center in Gaylord. The three locations will be joined by video. The multiple locations will help all participants take part in the interactions that are an important part of MJTS, regardless of where they live and work. The meeting will run from 9:30 a.m. to about 3 p.m.

Registration for all locations is available at www.merit.edu/mjts. This meeting will also be Webcast. On the day of the event there will be a link to the stream on the above page.

Presentations will include the following and more:

* John Marra and Chris Lewis from Northern Michigan University will talk about cost-saving measures undertaken in IT operations over the past two years. They will review those efforts -- including powering down equipment, raising thermostats in the summer, replacing outdated HVAC equipment, moving to open source LMS software -- and the savings that resulted.

* Philippe Laurens, a research specialist at the department of physics and astronomy at Michigan State University, will discuss the department's work on the international ATLAS Experiment, a particle physics project at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The project relies on passing massive data sets between institutions, and Philippe will discuss the networking and tools involved, particularly the use of perfSONAR to detect and diagnose networking problems.

* Derek Harkness from Merit will discuss techniques for creating and managing virtual data centers.

* Allen Kluender from Cisco will present methods for ensuring that an organization's Web site and other services can be reached by IPv6 users. He will discuss address translation techniques as well as DNS considerations and options for directly enabling IPv6 on web servers.

* Merit staff will discuss backbone network developments and recent activities related to Merit's broadband stimulus projects.

* Randy Jobski from Lansing Community College will discuss Higher Education Application Tracker, an application initiated by the college that helps higher education institutions collaborate on technology projects. HEAT tracks applications and services that institutions have installed or will install; participating institutions can use HEAT to find collaborators and assistance with their own projects.

MJTS meetings are open only to Merit member organizations.
