Township Supervisor Will Not Resign Amid Charges Of Bribery

DETROIT (WWJ) - Royal Oak Township's Supervisor has been indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple counts of bribery ... but William Morgan says he is innocent and has pled not guilty in court.

The charges stem from allegations that Morgan took $10,000 from a company bidding on a demolition contract with the township.

But Morgan's lawyer Amer Hakim says his client is denying any wrongdoing and plans to be back at work as supervisor in the morning.

"Doing what the people of Royal Oak Township have elected him to do and that is to run the Township. He is going to serve out the rest of his term. He has absolutely no intentions of resigning. Why should he? He hasn't done anything wrong," said Hakim.

Hakim says every decision Morgan has ever made while in public office was for the betterment of the Township ... and never to benefit himself.

"Without prejudging the case because obviously Mr. Morgan is presumed innocent until proven guilty. But in speaking abstractly, this goes to the heart of the integrity of the elected official, the public official," said Randall Pentiuk, Township's General Counsel.

"I can assure you that residents can rest easy that they have a township  board composed of six other individuals that are very committed, very loyal to the township, and will be working very hard to take care of the government business there," added Pentiuk.

Morgan does not plan on stepping down from his position. His lawyer says he will be at work as supervisor in the morning.
