September Is National Honey Month

DETROIT (WWJ) - September is National Honey Month, and it is the perfect time to celebrate one of nature's simplest pleasures – honey.

Americans consume approximately 1.3 pounds of honey per person annually – mixing it into sweet and savory recipes, adding spoonfuls to tea and other beverages, and drizzling it over biscuits, toast and muffins. But now more than ever, consumers are realizing the uniqueness and versatility of this one-ingredient wonder.

Honey's versatility spans the kitchen cabinet, the bathroom vanity, the gym and beyond, and because of its natural appeal, consumers and product manufacturers alike are gravitating toward this back-to-basics ingredient.

Bruce Boynton, CEO of the National Honey Board, said for centuries, honey has been used as a natural addition to people's lifestyles, including sweetening foods, suppressing a cough, moisturizing your skin and boosting your energy levels.

But honey's versatility is not only in its uses. There are more than 300 varietals of honey in the United States alone, each with a distinct flavor profile and color based on the floral source where the bees collect the nectar.

Detroit's Eastern Market is a great place to pick up some local batches of honey. Eastern Market is open Saturdays, with a small selection of vendors open on Tuesdays.
