Peters To Challenge Clarke In Congressional Race

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - It's a key announcement in the upcoming race for Congress.  Congressman Gary Peters will run against first-termer Hansen Clarke in the newly-redrawn 14th Congressional District.

Districts are re-scrambled every decade, and those newly redrawn lines placed Peters roughly in the same district as veteran Congressman Sander Levin.

Speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950's Tim Kiska, Peters explained why he decided to run against Clarke instead.

"Over half of the new 14th District are places that I've represented either as a Congressman or as a State Senator," said Peters.

"Pontiac, West Bloomfield and Farmington Hills are in my current congressional district. And the cities of Southfield, Lathrup Village, Oak Park and Royal Oak Township I represented as a State Senator for over 8 years," he said.

The only veteran Congressman who has yet to announce his plans is John Conyers. A spokesman for his office said he will make an announcement soon.
