Charity Golf Outing To Support Gleaners 'Weekend BackPack' Program

W. BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) -  Local celebrities and golfers are teaming up on the course to help feed the region's hungry kids.

WDIV Sports Anchor Bernie Smilovitz will host the Harvest Classic golf outing at Tam O'Shanter Country Club on Monday.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Gleaners Food Bank Weekend BackPack program that aims to keep kids fed on Saturday and Sundays.

Smilovitz says recruiting participants is more important than ever before.

"The problem is there are a lot of people hurting on both sides, people who used to play can't afford to play anymore and people who need the food need it even worse now, cuz there (are not) as many jobs, so it's a tough sell right now," said Smilovitz.

The outing's celebrity roster includes former Tigers Frank Tanana and Dave Bergman and former Lions linebacker George Jamison.
