Metro Detroiter Shares 9-11 Experience

DETROIT (WWJ) - How were you impacted by the events of September 11th?  WWJ's Terri Lee has one man's story from metro Detroit. Stephen Singleton packed up and headed to Ground Zero to help search for victims of the terrorist attacks.

"And, 3 or 4 days later, I accompanied the police dept," said Singleton."I decided that maybe I could climb up that rubble and find someone with a police dog ... so I did that."

Singleton also volunteered in the Family Assistance Center, helping families of the victims.

He describes it as one of the hardest things he's ever had to do -- helping people try to make sense of what had happened to their loved ones.  That's where he met a man by the name of George Meronis.

"He (Meronis) was sharing with me that there was a young man he was running with ... and once the Trade Center started to collapse, he lost him.  And he felt really bad, so he lost a good friend, but he turned to me and said 'I've gained a friend in you.'"

Singleton says he and Meronis have been friends ever since, sharing memories and mementoes from that infamous day 10 years ago.
