Committee To Hear Arguments On New International Bridge
LANSING (WWJ) - A Michigan Senate committee is set to begin a series of hearings on legislation that could make the idea of a new bridge between Detroit and Windsor a reality.
Over the next two months, each side in the debate over the project will get an hour at the hearings before the Senate Economic Development Committee.
Each hearing will each cover a different issue surrounding the bridge, as follows:
• Wednesday, September 21: Auto Industry
• Wednesday, September 28: Local Community Impacts
• Wednesday, October 5: Traffic Projections
• Wednesday, October 12: Gateway Project
• Wednesday, October 19: Legal Issues
As with all committee hearings, the meetings will be open to the public.
Gov. Rick Snyder has expressed his support for the project, asserting that it will create jobs and bolster international trade.
Those speaking out against the project have include neighboring southwest Detroit residents and some who don't believe it will be worth the $4 million price tag. The Morouns, who own the Ambassador Bridge, are also pushing for a "no" vote on building a second span.
A committee vote on the bridge legislation is scheduled to happen on or after Wednesday, October 26.
