DETROIT (WWJ) – While the Detroit Tigers wouldn’t mind paying tribute to the late Ernie Harwell with a World Series title this year, a different type of ceremony will honor the legendary broadcaster this weekend. It’s the 26th Annual Hospice of Michigan’s Crystal Rose Gala, held at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit on Friday, Sept. 16.

In honor of Harwell, a scene from Mitch Albom’s popular play “Ernie” will be performed by the City Theatre.

WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas spoke with Harwell’s son Bill, who said he has seen the play four times and it was very emotional.

“It was very realistic and I told the actors how genuine I thought it was and how much I appreciated it. And I could also feel the love that they had for him,” he said.

Individual tickets for the Crystal Rose Gala can be purchased for $250 each. For additional information call 313-578-6269 or visit
