Detroit History: Wolverines vs Buckeyes vs Congress

One hundred seventy-five years ago, Michiganders demanded statehood on their terms, which meant keeping Toledo despite Ohio’s backroom political hijinks.

Angry Buckeyes coined a new insult to hurl at their belligerent northern neighbors: “Wolverines!”
