Robbery Suspect Shoots Self Following Standoff

DETROIT (WWJ) - A man who police say may have been behind the armed robbery of an elderly man in Hazel park is dead.

WWJ's Kathryn Larson reported that a barricaded gunman situation was unfolding after 11 a.m. on 8 Mile Road near I-75.

Witness Lemar Gilmore, who works across the street, said the suspect was sitting in what appeared to be a dark-colored Dodge Durango.

Gilmore said he heard from city workers that the man took off after am armed robbery and sparked a multi-agency police chase that turned into a standoff on the service drive.

"Police had already been on the scene and they blocked off all side streets, so he can't maneuver down those side streets," Gilmore told WWJ.  "They've got 8 Mile totally blocked and he's barricaded inside his vehicle ... he's refusing to leave the vehicle and he has a gun."

Nearly an hour later, police said the man shot himself, ending the standoff.

Whether the suspect was involved in Monday's nights armed mugging remains under investigation.
