DPS Likely To Lose Hundreds Of Teachers

DETROIT (WWJ) – The Detroit Public School district has been steadily losing students over the past several years and now the district will likely be losing hundreds of teachers over the next few years.

WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas said the district’s deficit elimination plan estimates that 40 percent of the teachers in the Detroit Public School system will be gone in the next four years. That’s in addition to about 700 leaving on their own and nearly 400 more expected to be laid off next year.

Right now, there are about 3,800 teachers, which is down from about 6,200 five years ago. The plan says the district will save $74 million next year in salaries and another $15 million in pension costs.

The exodus of teachers comes next year as many troubled schools will be moved into the new school district created by Governor Rick Snyder. About 40 DPS schools have been identified for the new Education Achievement Authority system, which authorities hope will boost academic achievement in failing schools.
