Mom Could Face Charges In Case Of Pregnant Preteen

MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) - A Macomb County mother is under investigation for potential criminal charges in the case of a 12-year-old girl who allegedly gave birth to a child by her mother's boyfriend.

That's according to Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith, who made his first public remarks on the case Tuesday.

"You understand, I guess, how a child as small as this could not understand that they were pregnant. But you wonder about, you know, a parent or a mother not recognizing a pregnancy such as this," Smith told WWJ Newsradio 950.

"So, there's a lot of irons in the fire and that investigation is still ongoing," he said.

Defendant Trevaun Brooks was living with the mother and child when he allegedly impregnated the girl at age 11.  The girl, now 12, gave birth in August  She and the baby are in the care of  state Child Protective Services.

Smith called the case "reprehensible."

"We're still waiting for the DNA tests to come back to definitively prove that the defendant is the father of this child born to this 12-year-old, but we certainly don't have any doubt of that," Smith said.

Brooks, 28, plead not guilty in the case. Calling his client "a gentle soul", Brooks' attorney has urged the public to remember that he is innocent until proven guilty.

He returns to court in October.
