Detroit History: There’s Gold On That There Peninsula!

The mother of all lodes … that was the description that reached Detroit 130 years ago about the big gold strike in the Upper Peninsula, triggering a prospectors’ rush across the Straits of Mackinac.

Most discovered only hardship and disappointment, but legends survive about the lucky few whose descendants are still getting quietly rich by digging in the right places.
