Woman Attacked During February Break-In Dies
MACOMB TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a 69-year-old woman who survived being stabbed in the neck during a daytime break-in at her suburban Detroit home in February has died.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Department says Joanne Eisenhardt of Macomb Township died Tuesday. An autopsy conducted by the Macomb County medical examiner's office was expected to determine whether the death was related to the stabbing.
Prosecutors say a murder charge could be brought if a link is made to the stabbing.
Joseph Reiner is charged with attempted murder and home invasion in the attack. He was arrested in New York. A hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence for the 27-year-old to stand trial began earlier this year but hasn't been completed.
Eisenhardt, who was found with two knives in her neck, was able to call 911 after the attack and give a description of her assailant. Police captured Renier in New York after a multi-state chase ensued when he was clocked doing 65 in a 55 zone.
Defense attorney Timothy Barkovic has said Reiner maintained his innocence.
