Detroit Science Center Closes Temporarily

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Science Center is facing a cash crunch, forcing it to close temporarily.

A drop in donations and a declining economy have combined to force the Detroit Science Center to shut its doors through October 12th.

President and CEO John Miller conducted a review of the museum's financial operations and found there wasn't enough working capital to fully operate. The move will help hold down expenses and conserve cash while officials develop a plan that preserves the long-term future of the facility.

While the museum is closed, staff members and the Board of Trustees plan to develop a strategic plan to ensure the long-term viability of the facility. The situation actually began when the museum saw it's financial resources tighten after a program and facility expansion, and its Accidental Mummies exhibitions didn't meet attendance and revenue expectations
