Law Enforcement Targets Detroit's 'Deadliest Zip Code'

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police, both federal and local, are zoning in on one especially dangerous Detroit neighborhood.

"48205 is Detroit's deadliest zip code," said U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade, speaking to the media Thursday alongside Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Police Chief Ralph Godbee.

McQuade said for the next 30 days, law enforcement will crack down on violent crime in that zip code.  They're calling it "Project 48205".

"So, ATF has now positioned somebody in 48205 full-time, is working with the Detroit Police Department there. And we are reviewing every gun case for federal prosecution," she said.

McQuade said federal gun laws are much stiffer, with no parole and longer sentences for the offenders.

Bing said he hopes this initiative will have potential violent criminals thinking twice.

"Their day is done," said Bing. "It is just a matter of time before we catch them, and once we catch them, they're gonna get prosecuted, and they're going to spend serious time."

Chief Godbee added that this initiative, along with targeted community efforts, should bring the desired results.
