–The Wings recalled defenseman Brendan Smith Saturday from Grand Rapids (AHL), clearing a roster spot by placing Mike Commodore on short-term injured reserve (seven days). This enabled Smith to serve one game of his five-game NHL suspension for a hit to the head on Chicago’s Ben Smith in a Sept. 28 preseason game. Smith also was suspended for what amounts to three games by the AHL for the same hit.

–Wings center Henrik Zetterberg was glad to be able to watch Peter Forsberg’s jersey retirement ceremony from the bench Saturday. Zetterberg grew up in Sweden idolizing Forsberg and patterned his style after the former Avalanche great. Zetterberg loved the way Forsberg played — his tenacity and grit, the way he controlled the puck through traffic, and his relentless hounding of opponents to get back the puck.

QUOTE TO NOTE
“It was nice to get some shots early to get in the game. Home openers are emotional, you come out with a lot of energy, everyone’s excited. It’s no surprise they had a little jump on us early in the first. Once we found our legs 10 minutes or so in, I thought we controlled the pace most of the game.” — G Ty Conklin.
