Macomb County Clerk To Offer Military ID

MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) - Macomb County officials have voted to begin offering photo identification for U.S. military veterans.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Laura Bonnell reports many war veterans, especially those in the Vietnam Era, were not issued ID cards when discharged, making it more difficult to show their military service.

So, 65-year-old war veteran Fred Humig asked the Macomb County Clerk to offer photo ID's for vets.

"First of all, recognition of your service, and it also can be used for discounts at various locations throughout the United States, actyally," said Humig.

Macomb County Clerk Camilla Sabaugh thought it was a great idea. She said the board voted unanimously to make it happen.

"It's a winner for everyone," Sabaugh said. "I think that some of the people are carrying around a paper identifying them as a veteran, and this card is going to, you know, be complete so that they can get all that information on there and identify themselves," she said.

Sabaugh said she's going to make a recommendation to the Oakland County Clerk to follow suit.

The photo ID will be available for veterans in Macomb County by Veterans day.  The cost is a one-time fee of $10.

Along with some counties across the country, in Michigan Emmet and Charlevoix counties already offer the ID's.
