Two Children Hit By Car Near School

GROSSE POINTE WOODS (WWJ) - Two Grosse Pointe Woods Middle School students were hit while trying to cross Mack Avenue.

Grosse Pointe Woods Sgt. Raymond Yonkowski said the students were walking to Parcells Middle School.

"The traffic from Mack Avenue had a green light, but the traffic in the right lane had stopped, allowing the students the cross. The traffic in the left lane had no reason to stop, because they had a green light, and the students stepped out in front of the vehicle and were brushed by the vehicle passing in the left traffic lane."

Sgt. Yonkowski said EMS personnel examined the students after the accident and they were fine. The students, whose names aren't being released, were unharmed and sent on their way to class.

Police are reminding parents to slow down when driving to school or dropping off their kids and for students to pay attention. Police also suggest parents go over ground rules with those students that do walk to and from school, such as always crossing at a designated cross walk and only attempting to cross the street when they're signaled to do so.
