Demonstrations In Warren & Bloomfield Twp. Result In 5 Arrests

DETROIT (WWJ) - Dozens of people marched along Van Dyke at 12 Mile in Warren in what was billed as a rally for good job.

WWJ's Beth Fisher reports that about 70 people carrying picket signs marched in front of the Tech Plaza to oppose what they call attacks on Michigan education employees.

Joka Calazons is demonstrating - she lost her job as a teacher in Warren: "I've been unemployed for over a year now, and I'm back at the university trying to get a teaching degree and I'll continue to fight to be a teacher, and I'm hoping that the government gets the cue that those of us who are passionate about teaching - we are going to persist, we are going to fight it," said Calazons.

Others at the protest said the governor should be working to create jobs in Michigan.

On the other side of town in Bloomfield Township - a handful of protesters were arrested after a rally at the Oakland County Republican Party Headquarters over GOP opposition to President Obama's jobs bill.

The demonstration lasted about 90 minutes as the group chanted, "Pass that Bill, now!" referring to the President Obama's American Jobs Act that failed to pass the Senate last week.

Senate Republicans last week filibustered the American Jobs Act, which would invest $50 billion in job-creating projects rebuilding America's bridges, roads and transit systems.

Michigan ranks the 13th worst in the nation when it comes to the condition of its bridges, with 1,437 bridges in need of repair.
