Air Force Trainee Dies After Workout

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A 26-year-old Air Force basic trainee collapsed and died after completing a physical training assessment at a San Antonio air base.

An Air Force statement issued Thursday says Steven D. Williams of Detroit died at a San Antonio hospital early Wednesday, almost two hours after collapsing at Lackland Air Force Base.

The statement says Williams collapsed after completing the workout, which includes sit-ups, push-ups and a 1.5-mile run. Basic trainees must complete the assessment to satisfy military standards and be accepted into the U.S. Air Force.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.

The statement says Williams was a dorm chief, "the highest leadership position among trainees."
