12 People Killed On Metro Detroit Roadways This Weekend
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - It was a horrible weekend on <etro Detroit roadways with 12 people dead in separate accidents, including a fiery crash on M-10 in Southfield that killed five people.
WWJ has learned that the four victims worked at a local IT software company. Their names have not officially been released by police but, as reported by miindia.com, the victims are:
Venkatachalam Pasala 30, married with a 2 month old baby girl.
Rajendra Prasad Jonnals 50, is Pasals's father-in-law visiting with his wife.
Satyendranath Akula 35, his wife and 2 year old baby recently arrived from India.
Sumanth Rajana 32, married 6 months ago and his wife is in India.
The crash happened early Sunday morning when four men in a sport utility vehicle and a 23-year-old man driving a car were killed when one of the vehicles traveling south in the northbound lanes of M-10 struck another head-on near Telegraph Road in Southfield.
In a separate deadly accident, two Oakland University students were killed and a third remains hospitalized after an accident on I-75 near Clay Avenue in Detroit Saturday afternoon. The crash shut down southbound I-75 for a time.
An 18-year-old woman from Romeo and a 19-year-old Leonard woman were killed. Oakland University plans to have grief counselors on hand Monday.
Police say there were several other fatal crashes this weekend.
Oakland County Sheriff's officials say a 77-year-old man was killed in a single vehicle crash just after 6 p.m. Sunday.
Authorities say Thomas Raymond Stewart of Otter Lake was driving his pickup truck northbound on Orion Road when it ran off the roadway, and hit a fence before crashing into a tree. He was transported to Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Alcohol is not thought to be a factor in the crash.
Two people died in a crash at 12 Mile Road and Northwestern Highway. A man was killed in Lincoln Park when he was hit at Dix and Southfield roads. On I-94 near Inkster Road, a motorcyclist struck a guardrail, killing his passenger, while a rollover accident killed a woman in Augusta Township.
