EMU Student Charged With Stealing Personal Info
YPSILANTI (WWJ) - A former Eastern Michigan University student has been charged with swiping personal information from the school's offices.
Keonte Manning faces eight felony counts for allegedly taking social security numbers and other data.
Geoff Larcom, executive director of media relations, Eastern Michigan University, said two student employees who worked in offices where they had access to student records were found to have used that access to improperly copy and, in a some instances, transmit personal information of EMU students or their dependents.
This involved using the social security numbers, taken from hard paper copy student records, for the purpose of filing fraudulent tax returns in order to obtain a tax refund to which they were not entitled.
Larcom said the school made a long list of changes to stop something like this from happening again.
Charges are still pending against the second suspect.
