Matt Dery's Random Thoughts: Lions' Get Backup Punter

1. The Detroit Lions wrapped up their week of practice today and they have  a new punter, former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Robert Malone. He was signed today as a precaution just in case the regular punter Ryan Donahue cannot kick Sunday against the Bears. Donahue is suffering from a strained quad. Coach Jim Schwartz says no decision has been made yet on his status.

Jahvid Best once again missed practice today and will not play Sunday in order to make room on the roster for Malone. Tackle Jason Fox was placed on injured reserve after reaggravating a knee injury yesterday at practice.

2. History will be made tonight out in San Diego as Michigan State opens up the basketball season on an aircraft carrier, the SS Carl Vinson. The Spartans battle top ranked North Carolina on Veteran's Day and only 7,000 people can see the game live on the ship, including President Barack Obama.

Michigan opens its season at Crisler Arena against Ferris State, with a tipoff at 7 p.m. on WWJ 950.

3. First place Edmonton comes to the Joe tonight as the Wings go for three straight wins after losing six in a row. Mike Babcock says this is a very good team on the other side. Henrik Zetterberg was forced to leave this morning's skate with an undisclosed injury. Hear the game at 7:10 p.m. on 97.1The Ticket.

4. The Detroit News is reporting the Tigers are very interested in Cuban free agent outfielder Yoennis Sespehdes, a 26-year-old centerfielder.
