Residents Asked For Ideas On Old Train Station

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Michigan Central Train Station - part of Detroit's history that has been an eyesore for decades - could see some kind of rehabilitation. The family of owner Matty Moroun now has a website for your ideas on how to renovate the iconic landmark.

TalkToTheStation.com was set up so that local residents could submit their ideas for fixing up and using the long abandoned property.

Southwest Detroit resident Robert Connole has fond memories of the station and tells WWJ that he would like to see it returned to its grand past. However, nearby resident Fredrick Morris says there's not much that can be done with the old station other than use it as a facade.

"I know it's a lot of producers that's coming over using that as a backdrop," he says. But, other than a background for movies, Morris doesn't think the building could ever be used again because of the water damage and other issues.

Other residents would like to see the station used as a recreation center with office space for non-profit groups and charities.

Clean-up and stabilization of the huge, 98-year-old building began this week and is expected to take millions of dollars.
