Michigan Lawmaker Takes A Shot At Jack Daniels

LANSING (WWJ) - Could Michigan become the new home of Jack Daniel's whiskey? Not likely, but one state lawmaker says, why not take a shot?

House Speaker Jase Bolger is getting in on the ground floor of the potential Jack Daniels sweepstakes by inviting executives with the distillery to visit Michigan, just in case the iconic spirits-maker decides to leave its longtime Tennessee home.

Some in that state are proposing a so-called "barrel tax" on the Lynchburg-based company that could raise up to five million dollars a year. Bolger says Michigan's business climate is improving.

He also points to the state's abundant supply of fresh water.

A Jack Daniels spokesman says there are no current plans to move out of Tennessee.
