Royal Oak Murder Has Residents On Edge

ROYAL OAK (WWJ)   Royal Oak Police are investigating the murder of an elderly woman, found dead in her home near Woodward Ave. and 13 Mile.  Police say 80-year old Nancy Dailey was tied up  and her throat was cut.  Her body was discovered Sunday night by officers who were asked to check on her by concerned loved ones.

Monday morning the yellow crime scene tape remained up on both sides of a one-story house on Trafford Road. A car was still in the driveway and lights on in the house, with a Royal Oak squad car standing outside in what is otherwise a quiet neighborhood.

Mary Ann Van Hietsman, of the Woodward-side Improvements Association, lives a street over from the scene of the crime.

"I see the woman all the time," Van Hietsman said. "She comes to our neighborhood stuff ... and I don't know. It just doesn't make sense to me."

Van Hietsman is now reaching out to other association members to make them aware of the situation and for residents to lean on one another.

"I feel really scared, really freaked out, afraid to leave my house," said neighbor Terry Powell, who called Dailey a "sweet lady."

"I don't know ... it's just so overwhelming. I can't even fathom what her family is going through," she said.

Police, meanwhile, have not released any details or any circumstances surrounding the woman's death. There are reports that the woman's throat was cut and her hands were bound.

There's no word of any suspects or arrests at this time. Anyone who may have any information is being asked to call Royal Oak Police.
