Major Novi Road Project Complete

NOVI (WWJ) - Just in time for holiday weekend shopping, a major road in Novi is open after more than seven months of construction.

Officials Wednesday held a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the widening of Novi Road between 10 Mile and Grand River.

Erik Wilson, Chair of the Road Commission for Oakland County, said this project has been a long time coming.

"For the road commission, for Oakland County, this is our Mackinac Bridge," Wilson told WWJ's Stephanie Davis. "This is the largest bridge that we have for the road commission."

Mayor Bob Gatt said this is a relief for motorists.

"It's a necessary thing and it's gonna save lives, actually," said Gatt. "You know, I was a policeman here for a long time and this railroad crossing ... it's never safe to cross the railroad tracks. So, this is a good thing for everybody."

The $25 million  project including widening the formerly two lane road to five lanes and construction of a bridge over the railroad tracks. The majority of the cost was covered by a combination of state and federal funds.
