Gleaners Food Bank Offers Cyber Monday 'Deal'

DETROIT (WWJ) - While you're online this Cyber Monday doing some shopping for yourself and others, one local non profit group is asking you not to forget those whose cupboards are bare.

Gerry Brisson of the Gleaners Community Food Bank says the need is greater than ever during the holiday season.   He said, based on the latest studies, the poor in Michigan are missing a weekly average of six meals per week per person.

Brisson told WWJ's Greg Bowman that most of those who benefit from emergency food assistance are families.

"Sixty percent of the households that get emergency food have at least one working person in their family. I mean, people are trying to make it on their own," said Brisson.

"The question is, when there just aren't enough jobs for everyone at a level that they can support their families, we've gotta continue to provide a safety net so that they can get back on their feet," he said.

Gleaners is offering matching gifts to those who donate today on Cyber Monday.
