Umbrella Maybe A Factor In Fatal Pedestrian Crash

CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) - Clinton Township police believe rain was a factor in a fatal accident Monday night.

Investigators said an elderly woman, who was not immedialty identified, was hit and killed by a car as she tried to cross Canal Road, just east of Hayes, around 7:30 p.m.

It was dark and raining, and police said the victim may not have seen oncoming traffic because she was using a large umbrella.

The driver of the vehicle, a 42-year-old from Sterling Heights, stopped and was questioned by police.  He told police the woman crossed unexpectedly.   Witnesses also told investigators the woman "appeared suddenly and unexpectedly," according to a statement from police.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or have information about the victim should call Clinton Township police at (586) 493-7900.
