Michigan Poised To End Some Extra Traffic Fines

LANSING (AP) - The state of Michigan is poised to eliminate some extra fees that are imposed on drivers for certain traffic offenses.

The Senate voted 37-0 to eliminate some fees charged in Michigan's "driver responsibility" program. The bill previously passed the House and will be sent to Gov. Rick Snyder for his consideration.

The legislation would repeal parts of a program enacted in 2003 that added extra fees to some offenses that offenders already must pay fines for committing. Some lawmakers consider the extra fees unfair and say it makes driving and insurance more difficult to afford.

The extra fees would end for offenses including driving with an expired license, and driving without insurance or proof of insurance.

The state could lose more than $20 million a year by eliminating the fees.
