Red Wings Ring The Bells For Salvation Army

TROY (WWJ) - Detroit Red Wings Darren Helm and Justin Abdelcaider spent the afternoon out in the cold in Troy this week ... ringing the bell for the Salvation Army.

Darren Helm has rung the bell for the past three years. "We get a chance to interact with our fans quite a bit, I think it's a little bit more special during this time of year when people come out and give up their time and their money and donate to a good cause," said Helm.

The line was around the block for the two young Wings.  Helm hopes it will spur them on to beat the amount of money raised by his coach Mike Babcock.

"It's more bragging rights, obviously we don't want to lose to our coach, so yeah -it's big bragging rights in the dressing room," said Helm.

Zack Kottler of West Bloomfield is a BIG Helm fan. "Helm is my favorite player on the Red Wings, he's really fast and he just shows great energy - killing penalties and breaking out."

The pair drew young fans like Ryan Eaton."I like that they are like the future, all the older players and then we have this younger generation coming in - that we will be able to grow up with," said Eaton.

Helm was joined by teammate Justin Abdelcaider in front of the Hockeytown Authentics in Troy.
