Trooper Takes Plea Deal In Death Of Ionia Teen
IONIA (AP) - An off-duty state trooper whose car struck and killed a teenager in Ionia County has pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter.
Daniel Parker faces up to six months in jail after pleading guilty Wednesday. The 36-year-old says he lost control of his car while reaching for a cellphone with his right hand.
Parker's car struck two teens who were pushing a motor bike on a two-lane road in August. Sixteen-year-old Zachary Barber was killed and 14-year-old Donald Proctor suffered a broken leg.
Parker was originally charged with manslaughter with a motor vehicle, which carries a tougher punishment.
