Adam Helfman: Bathroom Renovation With DA Home Improvement

WYANDOTTE (WWJ) - It's far too chilly to think about your home's exterior, but it's the perfect weather to crank up the furnace and get to work on your interior.

WWJ's Kathryn Larson spoke with HireitDone.com's Adam Helfman, who said the perfect place to start is in the bathroom.

"According to HireitDone.com, the number one home improvement that people are requesting this fall in Metro Detroit is bathroom remodeling. And as you know, people aren't moving, they're improving. So, where else to update but your bathroom," said Helfman.

Helfman, the weekend home improvement morning show host on Talk Radio 1270, said a bathroom remodel really pays off.

"The cost verse value report from Remodeling Magazine came out and in Metro Detroit, a bathroom can return on investment about 85 percent right out of the gates when they get started," said Helfman.

Dave Adamczyk, owner of DA Home Improvement in Wyandotte, said bathrooms can cost thousands of dollars to fix up, but there are some quick things you can do right now to add value.

"We try to get a bathroom model for everyone's budget," said Adamczyk.

"We had a customer come in and she wanted to change out all of her polished brass fixtures. We went in and changed them all to oil-rubbed bronze, like you see here. It seems to be pretty popular, about 80 percent of our bathrooms we do is the oil-rubbed bronze. So, we went in and changed all the fixtures in her entire house, we even changed out the handles on her doors," he said.

Another way to increase the value of your bathroom this holiday season is to simply replace the shower head. You can get a new one for about $75 to $100 in just about any design. And if you want to brighten up your bathroom, Adamczyk said his dad has created a new spa-like tile light trick.

"LED lights behind some of the tile, and we have some of them here on display. You take a glass tile and put some LED lights behind it and it just gives a little bit of mood lighting. You see a lot of mood lighting around the cabinet lights in kitchens and we incorporated that into the bathrooms. It seems to be real popular," said Adamczyk.

If you're looking from more than just little additions, Adamczyk said their showroom boasts nearly two dozen made in the USA designs.

"We try to make them the five by seven bathrooms. Most of the bathrooms here downriver, we find a lot of the average bathrooms are five by seven. So, people can come in here and actually get a good feel of the bathroom and the way we can set it up for them," he said.

Adamczyk said most customers wind up choosing a display model because they want their new look ready for their holiday guests.

"We've got a good, better and best bathroom. Our good bathroom we can get in for about $4,000 and then it goes up from there," he said.
