Michigan Senate Will Consider Breast-feeding Exemption For Jury Duty

DETROIT (WWJ) - Should breast-feeding moms be excused from jury duty?  The Michigan Senate is now considering a bill already passed by the House that would give the mothers with a note from a nurse, doctor or midwife,  an automatic exemption from jury duty.

WWJ's Laura Bonnell explains that right now, that decision is up to an individual judges' discretion.

Republican Representative Kurt Heise of Plymouth, who says his bill is "good for the mom and good for the system ..." is the sponsor of the bill.

The State House passed the exemption in November and the Michigan Senate is expected to consider the bill giving breast-feeding mothers an automatic exemption from jury duty.

A Royal Oak woman said she was nursing when she was called to jury duty, and a county clerk told her that was not a reason to be exempt ... but Evelyn Moses said she brought a note from her doctor and was excused.
