Detroit Students Learn Over Holiday Break

While most students are enjoying their holiday break, a number of  Detroit Public Schools are keeping youngsters busy, well fed, and healthy.

More than 100 volunteers are joining with teachers to kick off the brand-new Holiday Learning Fest in 18 schools to boost education for more than 1,000 Detroit students.

"We are able through this program to provide academic remediation and support, fun activities, and free meals for our students," DPS Spokeswoman Jennifer Mrozowski said. "We know that we have a lot of students who have all of those needs, in particular over the break, when they are unable to continue their learning and receiving the free meals that we provide year round."

Mrozowski said the program is also providing free food baskets and health care.

"We're offering at two of our participating schools free health clinics, which provide free health screenings and immunizations, through the St. John Health System," she said.

The Holiday Learning Fest runs through January 5th.
