Group Pushes To Legalize Marijuana

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Supporters of legalizing marijuana in Michigan are planning to take their best shot starting Thursday night in Ann Arbor.

Activists will kick-off their efforts outside Crisler Arena before Thursday's U-of-M basketball game to recruit helpers for a petition drive to make pot legal for people ages 21 and older.

More than 322,000 signatures are needed to put such a proposal on a state-wide ballot. The actual collection of petition signatures won't begin in earnest until mid-January and is expected to last until mid-July.

Legalization has become a hot issue with the legal wrangling over medical marijuana. Supporters say the prohibition of the drug has caused more problems than it's solved, and that it has made it easier for minors to obtain it.
