Unwanted Gift Cards? BBB Has A Few Tips

DETROIT (WWJ) - Are you stuck with an unwanted gift card leftover from the holidays?

WWJ's Sandra McNeill reports that all is not lost - there are a few alternatives for those gift cards.

CEO of the Southeastern Better Business Bureau Melanie Duquesnel says there are about 50 websites that will allow you to trade in or get cash back for that unwanted gift card - the higher the value the better the return.

"I'm seeing an average of about 75% - 85% return on the face value of the card but look and see what kind of fees they might have," said Duquesnel.

She says look out for inflated shipping charges and not to give out personal information.

"Don't give them your social security number, credit card information anything that ... an identity thief would really enjoy having," Duquesnel said.

"Now if it's going onto a credit card - if you are getting a refund for this, that's a different story, because you have some protections with a credit card. But when you start providing them with checking account or saving account numbers you've opened the doors for them to come in and potentially take whatever liberties they have with your account," said Duquesnel.

Some of the bureau's highest rated sites are giftcard.com and plasticjungle.com
