Possible Scammers Posing As DTE Employees In Macomb County

MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) – The Macomb County Sheriff’s office is cautioning residents to be on the lookout for people who may be posing as DTE employees and going door-to-door.

The people knocking on doors say they’re offering energy audits and haven’t offered identification.

DTE spokesman John Austerberry says their employees have photo ID’s.

Austerberry says that if a customer is unsure about an employees identification claiming to represent DTE – they should call DTE customer service at 1-800-477-4747 to verify.

“I would recommend not letting that individual in until you are certain,” said Austerberry.

The Sheriff’s office says anyone that sees anything suspicious should report it to their office.

“Our employees will never come to a customer’s home and offer cash refunds or ask to collect payment. Our field employees just don’t do that.  That’s happened in the past.”

Incidents happened in the Carriage Hills and Lockwood areas and they did not offer identification.
