Stoney's Six Pack Post Wild Card Edition 1-9-12

Here are six random and not so random thoughts after this past weekend's Wild Card playoff games.

1. The Biggest reason the Lions lost the game in my opinion was not the officiating or the horrid play of the secondary. The thing that ticked me off more than anything was their lack of tackling. I understand the opponents try very hard not get taken down ,but when guys like Louis Delmas and Steven Tulloch who are usually good at wrapping up fail, there is a huge problem. I can't believe how bad they were at such a basic fundamental.

2. The Houston Texans are legitimate. Even if they get trucked in Baltimore next weekend. You have to respect a team that has advanced to the second round with a 3rd string quarterback and without their best defensive player (Mario Williams). Although it is hard to watch Sean Cody two wins away from the Super Bowl.

3. Mike Smith is a moron. The Atlanta Falcons coach was a complete doofus in his team's loss to the Giants. He opted to go for 4th and 1 twice with a Matt Ryan sneak each time. The first time he passed up a field goal the second time he did it using an empty backfield. He also went into halftime with two unused timeouts while the Falcons had the ball. Certainly better time management could have given them at least a chance at a field goal.

4. Maybe Josh McDaniels knew what he was doing when he picked Demaryius Thomas and Tim Tebow three picks apart in the 2010 draft. Thomas certainly looks like he could be a stud receiver for a long time, while Tebow, well only God knows how good he can be. He certainly quieted the doubters with his play in the upset over the Steelers.

5. Despite the loss, it is obvious the Lions have the best passing duo in the NFL. With apologies to the Brady-Welker or Rogers-Jennings tandems, Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson are just sick right now with a good chance to be even better. To borrow a phrase from soap opera fame, they are Young and Restless. The two are not satisfied with 2011 and want more from themselves and this football team.

6. The best thing about NBC doing the Super Bowl is we don't have to listen to either Joe Buck or Jim Nantz. He may be old, but Al Michaels still gets excited, while Buck and Nantz remain too stuffy to ever let the emotion of the game enter their pompous lives.
