U.S. Energy Secretary 'Impressed' At Detroit Auto Show

DETROIT (WWJ) - U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu is getting a peek at the displays and new products at this year's North American International Auto Show at Detroit's Cobo Center.

He told WWJ Newsradio 950 that just a few years ago there were whispers U.S. automakers would not even survive, so looking at bold new concepts is exciting.

"To see them making cars and to read about the cars and to read the reviews, and to even read high executives in foreign car companies say, 'Well, we made a good car. They're making a better car,' it warms my heart," Chu said.

Chu said, despite recent bankruptcy worries for General Motors and Chrysler, there's plenty of room for carmakers in the coming years.

"We're looking at a worldwide market of 2 billion cars on the road. We've got roughly a billion today," he said. "So, that's a billion more cars worldwide. And, worldwide, where's the market gonna be? And I think it's gonna be where companies like Ford are moving."

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Governor Rick Snyder also among the dignitaries visiting the auto show press previews on Tuesday.
