No Injuries In Westland Standoff

WESTLAND (WWJ) - It was a tense standoff Wednesday afternoon at a high rise apartment building in Westland.

Police and SWAT teams spent about two hours at Hunters West apartments, on Yale near Warren and Wayne roads, after they were called to the scene when a man in his 30s threatened to harm himself.

Deputy Police Chief Daniel Karrick said officers forced their way through the door at around 3:30 p.m. and found the man armed with a knife.

"He was actually hiding in the bathroom in the bathtub," Karrick told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil. "But once we had the handcuffs on he seemed pretty compliant."

"He was making quite a few statements. He actually said to me, 'Thank you for coming in and saving me'," Karrick said.

The man was not injured and there was no one else in the apartment.

He was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
