Hundreds Gather To Remember Man Who Fell From Ambassador Bridge
GARDEN CITY (WWJ) - The MorningStar Ministries Church in Garden City was filled Thursday night, as hundreds of people turned out to reflect and share their memories of Kent Morton, the 27-year-old Garden City man who fell into the Detroit River while working on the Ambassador Bridge.
Among the family, friends and co-workers who gathered was Morton's brother Shane, who said we should never take our loved ones for granted.
"He was just an amazing guy. As an older brother, he was somebody to look up to, he was an amazing dad. Sometimes you don't know what you've got until it's gone. You've got to always remember that," said Shane.
Justin Latham said he misses his friend.
"The world lost a good person. My heart dropped for his little baby girl and his baby on the way, it's very sad. We've known him for a long time and this is just tragic. I love him and I love the family and I just wish them the best," said Latham.
Shane said the out-pouring of support has been tremendous, and definitely appreciated.
"It helps more than you can believe to see the support. I mean, there really are people out there that are offering things that, you know, they don't owe us anything, you know, I don't even know them and it does help to see all the kind words," he said.
Despite a day of searching, Morton's body hasn't been found. It's not clear if he was wearing or using safety equipment at the time.
A state investigation is underway, but could take several months to complete.
However, investigators say the company that hired Morton has been cited for 30 safety violations in recent years. One of the violations against Seaway Painting of Livonia included failing to safeguard employees.
The Detroit Police Dive Team is expected to resume searching Friday morning.
