U-M Student Climbs, Falls Off Medical Center Building

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Officials say a 20-year-old man was critically injured after falling 10 to 15 feet while climbing the outside of a medical building in Ann Arbor.

Talking to WWJ Newsradio 950, University of Michigan Police Spokesperson Diane Brown confirmed that the young man is a student.

Brown said that, after leaving a party at around 1 a.m., the man made his way to the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center building and began climbing. When reached the second story roof he then tried to climb down.

"From there (he) dropped onto a glass portico and struck his head," Brown said.

Brown said the student's injuries were very serious. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Brown said they're not even thinking about any charges against the student. They just want him to recover.

Meantime, campus police and university officials are trying figure out how it happened. "We'll be looking into how access was gained. And if any changes need to be made we'll make those adjustments," she said.

The man's parents have been notified. His name and hometown were not immediately released.
