U.S. Patent And Trademark To Open Satellite Office In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - The U.S. Patent and Trademark office is setting up its first satellite branch and it's chosen Detroit as its home.

WWJ's Violet Ikonomova reports that the new branch is expected to create over 100 jobs and will open by July.

Richard Mulsbee is with the Trademark Office and says Detroit was chosen as the site because people in the area have the skill-set needed to examine patents.

"You have a large concentration of intellectual property attorneys and licensed patents agents ... you have universities; Michigan State, University of Michigan that have very strong programs in the sciences - which we recruit," said Mulsbee.

Mulsbee sayd the low cost of living and the unemployment rate were also a draw - saying that will allow the office to be competitive recruiting applicants.

The Elijah J. McCoy  U.S.Patent and Trademark Office will be built at the former Stroh's Brewery headquarters.
