Baby Dies After Being Hit By SUV

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ/AP) - There are new developments in the case of a mother and baby who were hit while crossing the street. WWJ Newsradio 950's Ron Dewey reported it happened late Monday night at the corner of W. Eight Mile Road and Lahser.

Southfield police said in a statement that the 20-year-old Detroit woman was pushing the girl in a stroller at a crosswalk when they were struck by an SUV.

The mother and child were taken to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak where the baby was pronounced dead early at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. The mother was reported in stable condition with head injuries and a fractured femur.

The driver, a 29-year-old Livonia man, was interviewed by police and release pending further investigation.

Police said traffic lights and the crosswalk signals were working properly and they were trying to determine who had the right of way.

The investigation continues.  If anyone has any information about the crash they are asked to call the Southfield Police Department at (248) 796-5500.
