Scene In Detroit: Puppy Love

By Amelia Kanan, CBS Detroit Blogger

I've fallen madly in love. His name is Toad and he eats furniture (isn't that so precious?).

Unfortunately, I'm in no place to commit and bring this pupster home to meet the parents. However, I'm sure there are tons of you out there who are ready, willing and able to make someone like Toad a part of your life.

There are lots of motivations fueling your urge of owning a dog: maybe you're lonely, in need of teaching your kids some good old-fashioned responsibility, want to save a life or you need a running partner that doesn't chat it up when you hit that last brutal mile.

Whatever your justification may be, metro Detroit has a bountiful amount of resources to assist you in not only the process of pet adoption but also in the day-to-day life once that special pooch is all yours.

Dog parks are a great place for your dog to run and poop freely without scowls and also a playground for you to meet new people. If your work and travel schedule is gruesome, there are excellent daycares and boarding businesses near you like the quaint Canine to Five and Pet Suite Retreat that assure genuine attention to your fluffy little bowwow.

Whole Foods and Trader Joe's aren't the only places where you can find a natural option to feeding your dogs, Madison Heights' The Pet Beastro supports the Raw Dog Food Diet and offers a selection of natural and organic food, treats and supplements. Also, there are plenty of local groomers to keep that stench under control such as Bubble and Bark and Bingo Pet Salon

Note: As much as I encourage the owning of pets, I also believe strongly in the importance of fully understanding what it means to own a pet. If you are ideally dreaming of a life with a furry partner I highly suggest mulling over this list for a few months before jumping into anything.

Interested in pet adoption? Here's a few resources to help you:

City of Detroit Animal Control and Care

Detroit Dog Rescue

Michigan Animal Rescue League

Michigan Animal Adoption Network

Michigan Humane Society

Animal Welfare Society of Southeastern Michigan

Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter
