Farmington Makes Plans To Leave SMART

FARMINGTON (WWJ) - Another community has decided to opt out of the SMART transit system.

The Farmington City Council voted earlier this week to opt out of the SMART bus service by October 1st. The vote follows SMART's decision late last year to cut the number of routes it serves - especially along Grand River. SMART was forced to cut back several months ago because of declining revenues.

Currently, of 60 Oakland County communities, only 23 remain in the system. And, January 31st is the deadline for local municipalities to decide if they want to continue participating for the next two years.

Farmington now joins Livonia, Novi and West Bloomfield in leaving the suburban bus system.
