Thanks To Snow, Sled Dogs Will Run At Lyon Township Winterfest

NEW HUDSON (WWJ) - Thanks to Friday night's snow fall, it will be a day of wintry activities for the whole family at the first annual Lyon Township Winterfest celebration taking place in and around New Hudson and South Lyon on Saturday.

The Lyon Township Winterfest, which is open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., will offer a variety of events, including sled dog rides.

The Mid-Union Sled Haulers (MUSH) will be on hand to give adventure seekers the authentic experience of being in a sled dog race for $5 per rider. And even if the snow runs out, that's ok because Winterfest has an artificial snow machine just in case.

Families can also enjoy ice skating, figure skating demonstrations, a 5K snow race, hockey goal shoot off, an igloo building competition, snow golf and GPS treasure hunt. There's also a kids activities with games, old-fashioned jump rope making and a Winter Animal Care Clinic.

Live entertainment will be featured throughout the day, including an Elvis impersonator, magician and music provided by a DJ.

A "Chili, Soup, Stew and Ragu Cook-Off" will be held where restaurants enter their very best recipe to win the coveted title and bragging rights for, "Best of the Lyon Township Winterfest 2012." A panel of area personalities will judge the cook-off, in addition to attendees that can taste test samples for $1 with proceeds going to Active Faith, which provides long-term and temporary assistance to those who have fallen on difficult times.

The Lyon Township Winterfest will conclude with a family style benefit spaghetti dinner to be held at the River Bank Golf Club beginning at 4 p.m., with proceeds also going to Active Faith and MUSH. Attendees can win a chance for an overnight stay at the Lilac Tree Suites and Spa on Mackinac Island just for attending.
